We at Dermatology congratulate two of our faculty members on their achievements and promotions.
Terry Lechler, PhD, has been promoted to the rank of Associate Professor of Dermatology with Tenure. Dr. Lechler's work has been directed at understanding the basic biology of epithelial surfaces focused on how these cells develop including mechanisms of organization and attachment to basement membranes, cell to cell adhesion, and the cytoskeleton in cell differentiation.
He is truly the consummate scientist, teacher and leader. He has a strong commitment to develop the next generation of scientist and is an outstanding mentor. He has made major contributions to our Department and is a strong leader as we continue to grow our research effort. He is a willing collaborator who has opened enormous opportunities for expanding our understanding of the pathogenesis of skin disease and in wound healing. We congratulate him on his promotion.
Caroline Rao, MD, has been promoted to Associate Professor of Dermatology. Dr. Rao's effort has been focused on clinical dermatology and clinical education. At the VA she has focused her efforts on expanding the breadth of care offered to our patients. She has developed a high quality wound care service, developed an active tele-dermatology service, and added new services such a phototherapy and laser treatment of skin diseases.
Dr. Rao has a strong commitment to education and has taken a leadership role within our Department. She is the director of our Dermatology Elective program for the School of Medicine. She has led our Department in developing a curriculum that provides an education in dermatology that addresses the needs of students going into specialty medicine or primary care. She is innovative, enthusiastic and is a very effective role model to faculty and residents alike regarding making available dermatologic care for the underserved populations in our community. We congratulate her on her promotion.
