All candidates are required to complete at least an internship (in medicine, pediatrics or surgery), eligible for licensure as a trainee to practice medicine in North Carolina and be interested in a career in dermatologic clinic research. The program is designed to be completed within one year with the option for a second year if mutually agreeable to the mentor and the trainee. The program is clearly designed as a training program. The candidates are expected to complete the didactic portion of the program as well as participate in the other educational components of the program.
Research fellows will work with their principal advisor on clinical research projects. All fellows will:
- Complete all institutional programs for clinical research by IRBG and other regulatory groups and maintain appropriate certification.
- Work with PI on IRB submissions including consent forms and protocol development.
- Work with PI on appropriate monitoring of clinical research data and interaction with sponsor and/or monitors.
- As appropriate for individual PIs fellows will work in specific clinical programs related to research and general dermatology activities.
- Fellows will have opportunity to participate in institutional didactic programs as appropriate for their project and upon mutual agreement with the PI and program director (courses on statistics, design of research protocols, etc.).
Upon completion the Dermatology Research Fellow will have:
- Completed appropriate online and live course work regarding design and contact of clinical research,
- Developed the skills needed to be able to propose, design and implement new clinical trials,
- Gained increased ability to diagnose and manage patients with dermatologic diseases, especially as they relate to clinical trails
- Acquired writing skills necessary to publish reports in the medical literature
A SECOND YEAR OF FELLOWSHIP IS POSSIBLE WITH THE MUTUAL AGREEMENT OF THE MENTOR AND RESEARCH FELLOW.
