Duke University Department of Dermatology is accepting applicants for a Complex Medical Dermatology/Immunodermatology Fellowship, with an estimated start date of August 2026. This year-long position will provide fellows with extensive, hands-on experience in both inpatient and outpatient settings, as well as opportunities for clinical trial training, research, and academic teaching. The program offers close mentorship from dedicated faculty who are leaders in the field, and emphasizes evidence-based, multidisciplinary, patient-centered care.
Fellows will work closely alongside faculty mentors in outpatient complex medical dermatology clinics, on the inpatient consultation service, and in direct immunofluorescence training as well as have exposure to multidisciplinary experiences (80%) and independent general dermatology and procedural clinics (20%). The goals of this program are to facilitate expertise in the evaluation and care of the spectrum of complex medical dermatology including, but not limited to, connective tissue diseases, sarcoidosis, autoimmune bullous disease, neutrophilic dermatoses, rheumatologic-dermatologic disorders, calciphylaxis, hidradenitis suppurativa, vasculitis, and other severe dermatoses. As a critical component of this expertise, developing proficiency with a broad arsenal of systemic dermatologic therapies is emphasized.
In addition to robust clinical training within dermatology, the fellowship year provides protected time for research and scholarly activities including participation and training in immunodermatology-focused clinical trials. By serving as a sub-investigator on clinic trials, the fellow will gain the experience necessary to become a principal investigator in the future. The fellow will also be mentored in the successful navigation of academic and industry collaborations, both of which are necessary skills in the current academic medicine environment and are not emphasized during residency training. Attendance and presentation at multidisciplinary and specialty meetings as well as scientific conferences is financially supported and encouraged. Additionally, multidisciplinary electives with partners, including rheumatology, oral medicine, clinical pharmacy, allergy/immunology, ophthalmology, and others can be pursued and tailored to the fellow’s clinical interests.
This non-ACGME accredited fellowship is designed for board-eligible or board-certified dermatologists seeking in-depth training in complex medical dermatology, with plans to pursue a career in academic dermatology and would benefit from protected time and research mentorship to launch a successful career.
